What is Yoga?

Once entering the world of yoga, you will find there is an immense amount of literature available defining Yoga. In simple terms, as described by our beloved NHS,

"Yoga is an ancient form of exercise that focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. The main components of yoga are postures (a series of movements designed to increase strength and flexibility) and breathing. The practice originated in India about 5,000 years ago, and has been adapted in other countries in a variety of ways. Yoga is now commonplace in leisure centres, health clubs, schools, hospitals and surgeries."

The word yoga, comes from the Sanskrit word 'yuj' which translates as yoke or bind and is often interpreted as “union” or a method of discipline. Yoga teaches the importance of allowing the mind, body and breath work in 'union' to help to create a more balanced body and mind. Practicing yoga postures (asana) helps the body and mind to work together to build strength, flexibility, balance and concentration.

My journey into teaching yoga began whilst employed as a  Higher Level Teaching Assistant,

where working with children and families was a big part of my life!  I hold a BA First Class (Hons)

Degree in Early Years Education and Studies and also hold Early Years Practitioner Status, as well as

a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service), Paedriatric First Aid and other childcare related qualifications.  I enjoy regular yoga practice for continuous professional development and for my own well-being and I have learnt over the years the many benefits that yoga brings. This is the reason I embarked on my yoga training - I want to share the benefits of yoga.

Initially I trained with Tatty Bumpkin teaching yoga inspired stories to children in the nursery school where I worked. This was very popular with the children and their parents - they loved it and this inspired me to embark on further training to teach yoga independently. I trained and qualified with Handsonbabies for baby massage and baby yoga (both accredited by the Royal College of Midwives) and continued with Rainbow Kids for children, teenagers and community yoga (Accredited by Yoga Alliance UK).  In addition I trained with the Special Yoga Foundation (Recognised by the British Wheel of Yoga) and qualified to use yoga as a therapeutic intervention, with Special Yoga for children with Special Needs and Disabilities. As parents were continually asking me if I taught any adult classes, I was inspired by this and embarked on more training - in Zen Yoga, Qigong and Mindfulness and in various schools for mindfulness and meditation. This led me to train further, to include courses on Adult Mental Health First Aid, Sound Healing with Deepsong Sound and, building on my Early Years training, I took an Accredited course on Therapeutic Arts (for adults).

I believe that we now live in a more a stressful society. Many experience various stressful environments and this can impact on the whole family.  I also believe that Yoga, Qigong and Mindfulness based practices can offer the tools that are needed to control the mind and body to enjoy a calmer, happier and more enriched life.

What do I offer?

Yoga has taken me on quite an adventure and over time this has evolved in the way I share my practice with others.

I now have the great pleasure of sharing Zen Yoga, Qigong and a range of Mindfulness based practices at the Coach House in Rhyddings Park, Oswaldtwistle, supporting the well-being of the community.

As a result of the Covid_19 Pandemic, unfortunately I am unable to continue with drop-in classes for Zen Yoga in the Ribble Valley.

Please contact me directly for any other any enquiries as my visits to the wider schools, businesses and communities will depend on the government restrictions in place at the time.  Thank you for your understanding.
